Netherlands vs. Spain

July 11th, 2010 1 comment

Only 7 nations have raised the World Cup trophy in celebration since the competition started in 1930. But that select group will admit a new member when the Netherlands and Spain meet in this highly alluring final in Johannesburg. The intricate movements of Spain’s offence have been lauded since the country’s championship-winning performance at Euro 2008. Disrupting the rhythmic passing of Xavi and Andrés Iniesta, Spain’s two play makers, will be the Netherlands’ top challenge. Mark van Bommel, a defensive midfielder whose tackling in this tournament has infuriated opponents and galvanized his team mates, will orchestrate that effort for the Dutch.

But Spain did not advance to the final solely on the strength of its attack. Anchored by centre back Carles Puyol and the unwavering goalkeeper Iker Casillas, Spain recorded shoot outs in its three knock out-round games, winning by 1-0 each time.

The tandem of Arjen Robben, a left-footed wing who cuts in from the right wing, and Dirk Kuyt, a right-footed wing who cuts in from the left, will be charged with unlocking Spain’s back line.
