Turn Blood Cells into Heart Cells

April 11th, 2011 2 comments

Johns Hopkins scientists have developed a simplified, cheaper, all-purpose method they say can be used by scientists around the globe to more safely turn blood cells into heart cells. The method is virus-free and produces heart cells that beat with nearly 100 percent efficiency, they claim.

“We took the recipe for this process from a complex minestrone to a simple miso soup,” says Elias Zambidis, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor of oncology and pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins Institute for Cell Engineering and the Kimmel Cancer Center.
Zambidis says, “many scientists previously thought that a nonviral method of inducing blood cells to turn into highly functioning cardiac cells was not within reach, but “we’ve found a way to do it very efficiently and we want other scientists to test the method in their own labs.” However, he cautions that the cells are not yet ready for human testing.

alt
Carbohydrates can be gained from whole cereals, grains and its products. These foods will also provide adequate fibre and deal with minor issues like constipation and flatulence.
alt
Try including eggs, low-fat dairy products preferably milk, cottage cheese and yoghurt, fish, poultry without the skin, lean meats and nuts in a child’s diet to get proteins.
alt
Encourage your child to drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration as he indulges in any physical activity.
alt
Restrict the consumption of hydrogenated oils, butter, margarine, fatty cookies, sweets, cakes, pastries, shell fish, meat, pork, organ meats and egg yolk.
alt
Motivate your child to exercise and encourage all kinds of physical activities. Overall, 30 minutes of exercise daily will help remain fit.
alt
Milk, cheese, yoghurt, soya beans and nuts are rich in calcium, which is needed for healthy bones and teeth.
alt
Meat, particularly red meat and fish are rich sources of iron. Pulses (beans and lentils), green vegetables and fortified cereals are also good sources of iron. Iron is needed for healthy blood flow.
alt
Citrus fruit (such as oranges and lemons), tomatoes and potatoes – these are all good sources of vitamin C, which is essential for health. Vitamin C can also help the body to absorb iron, so it’s a good idea to give your child some food or drink containing vitamin C, such as a glass of fruit juice.
alt
Green vegetables, carrots and apricots are good sources of vitamin A, which is important for good vision and healthy skin.
alt
Try to make sure that your child eats snack foods such as cakes, biscuits, chocolate and sweets occasionally or in small amounts.
alt
Try giving your child fruits and vegetables as snacks between meals, as well as part of main meals by including salad.
alt
Fortified breakfast cereals, margarine and oily fish are rich in vitamin D, which helps ensure a good supply of calcium in the blood and therefore healthy bones.

Contraception: Types And Side-Effects

March 17th, 2010 No comments

To steer clear of any unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, it’s always advisable to have safe sex. But apart from the withdrawal method which asks for serious level of self-control, how many contraceptive methods are you aware of? Here is a list of methods of contraception and most importantly, their side-effects.

Vaginal ring
The vaginal ring is a small, flexible device coated with hormones. Like the birth control pill, the device releases estrogen and progestin to provide contraception. The difference from the pill lies in the delivery. While the birth control pill must be taken orally every day, vaginal ring releases the hormones continuously and in a lower dose than the pill once inserted. For someone who is comfortable inserting and removing tampons, this method would be no problem. The ring is very soft and can be squeezed together to be inserted.
Side-effects: Breast tenderness, breakthrough bleeding, vaginal discharge, deep vein thrombosis, vaginal irritation or infection.

Morning after pills
For those who have had one-time ‘accidental’ sex or might have just got ‘carried away’, the department has now made the provision of distributing ‘emergency contraceptives’ popularly known as ‘E-pills’. These are pills which you pop in after 72 hours. Commonly known as I-pill, E-pill and 72 hours, these prescriptions drugs are safe and available at all chemist shops. Within five days of the act.

And relax, Director, Family Welfare Dr M P Minocha says, “The emergency contraceptive pills are being distributed in a bid to broaden the choice of available contraceptives. This is only a back-up method and not a substitute for regular oral contraceptives. The pill is effective only for those who have a single act of unprotected coitus. However for women who have already missed their periods, the pill would not be effective.”
Side-effects: Nausea, vomiting, giddiness, irregular periods, breast tenderness.

Hormonal methods
Spermicides have sperm-killing chemicals and are available in foam, gel, cream or pessaries forms. Pessaries are to be inserted in the vagina 20 minutes before intercourse and should be allowed to stay there for six to eight hours after intercourse. Some women can be sensitive or allergic to spermicides
Side-effects: Sensitive or allergic to spermicides.

Intra Uterine Device (IUD)
It could be made of plastic, copper or stainless steel and is placed inside the uterine cavity. The Copper T is one such device. It can be kept in the uterus for 2 to 10 years. It is to be fitted by a qualified doctor only.
Side-effects: It could increase chances of pelvic infections, excessive menstrual bleeding and contracting STDs.

Depo-provera Injections
The hormone Medroxy-Progesteron is injected intramuscularly in the buttocks within the first five days of the cycle or within five days of delivery. It has to be taken every 14 weeks or three months.
Side-effects: Weight gain, hair loss, bleeding, headache, hot flushes, dizziness, amenorrhoea and lack of sexual desire.

How To Put On Weight

March 17th, 2010 No comments

Are you one of those struggling to put on weight? Here are some ways to achieve your goal

While realms of space has been dedicated solely to how you can knock off those unwanted pounds and lose those inches, there are also people that want to put on a little bit of weight, and have a tough time doing so. There’s no reason to take supplements or weight gain pills to put on weight — a healthy diet and some positive attitude is all that you need. First of all you need to find out if you’re suffering from a medical condition that is not allowing you to gain weight. Once you get the all clear from that, gear up to improve your diet.

- Since gaining weight is as tough as losing it, you need to be patient to get results. Make up a diet chart to ensure that you consume more calories than what you burn.

- The idea isn’t to eat everything that comes your way, but to eat wisely. Consume healthy foods but frequently — say three small meals and three large ones. Make sure you keep a gap of at least three hours between each meal so you can digest them properly. Never keep a five hour gap between meals.

- If you think that to gain weight, you need to forget exercising, think again. Resistance training exercises not only help you gain muscle mass, they will also increase your metabolism. Ask a fitness trainer to give you some weight gaining exercises. Don’t forget to protein rich foods after your workout.

- Foods that have great sources of protein include fish, low fat dairy products, milk, meats, almonds, sesame and sunflower seeds.
n Stay away from junk and fatty foods. Consult a dietician to know which high protein foods, high carbohydrate foods and healthy fats you can include in your diet. There is another misconception that beer helps you put on weight. Besides a beer belly you’ll gain nothing else. Don’t binge on it.

- Start your day with a healthy breakfast comprising a glass of milk and a banana or a banana milkshake, whole-grain toast, a fruit and some nuts. Stick to eating more fruit than having juices.

- Stick to wholegrain bread, green leafy vegetables, paneer, a chicken or fish dish, rice and dal for lunch. Eat dinner comprising of the same things albeit two hours before you hit the sack.

- Healthy snacks to eat in-between meals include fruits, cheese or chicken sandwiches, a bowl of plain or flavoured dahi or salads. Avoid fast foods like burgers, doughnuts and fried things.

Tips on Shaving

January 28th, 2010 No comments

~It’s best to not shave the very first thing in the morning. If possible, let your skin wake up for a while.

~Use an exfoliate such as Deep Cleaning Face Scrub (of the brand that suits your skin) to eradicate dead skin and open up the pores of the skin to prepare it for a close shave.

~Be wary of mentholated shaving products. Although the cooled feeling feels good, menthol can have a very irritating effect on skin.

~Stubble should be wetted with warm or hot water before shaving.

~Thoroughly massage shave cream into stubble. A vitamin and Aloe Vera based shave cream like Vitamin Rich Shave Cream will provide a close, soothing shave while protecting against razor burns and rashes.

~Use as sharp blade. My personal favourite is the Gillette MACH3Turbo.A dull blade is responsible for many shaving cuts.

~Rinse the blade often in hot water when shaving and use slow short strokes.

~Shaving with the grain means shaving in the direction of how the hair grows on your face. It is best to always shave this way. Shaving against the grain can cause redness, rashes and razor burn.

~After shaving, apply a moisturizer to soothe and protect the face like Rejuvenating Moisture Cream with vitamins, Aloe Vera, and Chamomile.

~If you prefer to use an after shave product check the label for alcohol. Dryness and stinging sensations are by-products of most after shaves whose primary ingredient is alcohol.

Homemade Aloe Vera Moisturizer and other Effective Moisturizers

January 27th, 2010 1 comment

An aloe Vera moisturizer is great when used as an anti-aging cream. Everyone knows how expensive anti-aging products are and most of them do not really work. We get carried away by advertisements and just end up throwing away our hard-earned money and being disappointed. To make your own at home, you need:

  • 1 tbsp. Aloe Vera gel
  • 1 tbsp. beeswax
  • 2 tbsp. lanolin
  • 2 tbsp. rose water
  • 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 to 3 drops of essential oil (lavender, orange, lemon or rose)

Combine the lanolin and beeswax together, melt them in the microwave for about 30 to 40 seconds. Mix the olive oil and aloe vera gel. The aloe will help hydrate the skin, it also contains plumping agents to keep the skin looking young. With regular use, your wrinkles will be less visible. Combine the two mixtures together. Beat until you get a very smooth consistency. Add the rose water and the essential oil. Keep beating until the aloe vera moisturizer is thick and creamy.

Pour the mixture into a clean jar that you can tightly seal. You can use and store the moisturizer for up to 4 weeks. Use it every morning and night after cleansing and toning your face.

Standard Moisturizer

Mix together 3 tablespoons of honey, 3 tablespoons of wheat germ, 1 tbsp. glycerin, ½ tbsp of rose water, and 1 tbsp. of witch hazel. Apply morning and night after cleansing for a soothing, natural moisturizer.

Just Aloe Vera Moisturizer

Add one part Aloe Vera to one part mineral water. Heat these in a double boiler until they form into a cream. This becomes a wonderful cream especially good for dry, sore or sunburnt skin.

Cocoa Butter Moisturizer Lotion

Melt 1 tablespoon of Cocoa butter with 2 tablespoons of Jojoba in a double boiler over medium heat. Once it is melted, stir in 1 tablespoon of aloe Vera and stir until it is well mixed. This one is good for dehydrated skin.

Protein Moisturizer

Beat one egg yolk into a cup of milk. Keep beating it until it forms a paste, then put it in the refrigerator overnight.

Homemade Face Masks for Men

January 27th, 2010 1 comment

Many men make the mistake regarding their appearance. They maintain a healthy diet, workout, read up on the latest fitness routines, purchase nice clothing, and spend huge bucks on a haircut and hair gel. But when it comes to learning about how to take care of their skin, they would rather take an elbow to the ribs in a pickup game of basketball.

Men’s skin is 20 percent oilier than women’s and has significantly larger pores. This means men need to take more care of their skin, especially during those hot and hazy months.

With the regular use of below given face packs/masks, you will feel magical difference in your skin.

Oily Skin

What you need:

  • ½ cup cooked oatmeal
  • Egg white

Sensitive skin

  • 1 whole egg
  • ½ cup cooked oatmeal
  • 1 tbsp. almond oil

Mix one whole egg, one half cup cooked oatmeal and 1 tbsp. almond oil. Allow oatmeal to cool to lukewarm. Apply to face and wait 10 minutes. Rinse off with lukewarm water.

Gelatin mask

  • 1 packet unflavoured gelatin
  • 2 tbsp. fruit juice

Mix one packet of unflavoured gelatin with 1 tbsp. fruit juice like grapefruit, orange or lemon and heat in a microwave until warm. Apply to face in thin layer and let it dry to the touch. Then peel the mask off and rinse with cool water. Instant peel mask!

SEVEN STEPS TO OBTAIN BEAUTIFUL SKIN

SEVEN STEPS TO OBTAIN BEAUTIFUL SKIN….

You don’t have to spend a lot of money to get beautiful skin, especially body skin. It can be dull and lifeless, but if you follow these steps, within a week you will notice that beautiful skin is replacing what was there before. The trick is to maintain it.

The more you use the steps, the better your skin will look. These steps are not about how to get nice skin, but how to get beautiful, stunning skin that you’ll want to show off!

Step 1 – Body Brushing

A soft bristled body brush should be used in long sweeping motions across the skin, towards the heart. If your skin is a bit neglected, you will notice a fine white powder coming from the skin as you brush. This is the dead skin cells that have been making the skin look dull.

Do not be tempted to use a body brush on your face, it’s way too harsh. Use everywhere else, but be very gentle with the skin around the chest. If you’re vigorous with your brushing, it can be a pretty good calorie burner too! Brush until the skin is smooth, but stop before the skin gets sore. Ideally you would body brush every day for beautiful body skin.

Step 2 – Exfoliation

Exfoliation is a must to remove the layers of dead skin cells that have built up on the skin. It needs to be done in the shower or standing in the bath, and the skin needs to be very wet before application.

The exfoliator should be applied as you go, not to the entire body, so start with an arm or leg and gently massage in circular motions, always in the direction of the heart. This stimulates circulation and gives an overall feeling of energy and wellbeing.

As the exfoliator massages away the dead skin cells, keep adding water and exfoliate until the area is smoother, but don’t make the area sore. Be extra gentle around the chest area, as skin can be thinner there. Special attention may be needed on feet, elbows and knees as these areas can be drier. I would exfoliate every other day to begin with, then just do it a couple of times a week once the skin is smooth.

Step 3 – Cleansing

Cleansing the skin rids it of dirt, excess sweat, unwanted micro-organisms and their metabolic products. Benzoyl Peroxide based cleansers work by destroying acnes, the bacteria that causes acne. By utilizing its anti-bacterial properties, these cleansers help reduce the number of blackheads and clogged pores.

Step 4 – Toning

Tone the skin. The most important reason you should tone after cleansing is to prepare the skin for precise absorption of skin conditioners. The toning process dissolves dead skin cells remaining after cleansing. It also clears residue contaminants and helps to better control oil production through the astringent effect.

Tonics will leave your skin feeling tight, clean, and fresh and will help to prevent future breakouts caused by environmental conditions.

Step 5 – Cell rejuvenation

The process of cellular rejuvenation is key to achieving better, healthy skin. The rejuvenation occurs when exfoliation is accelerated to stimulate the growth of fresh new cells more rapidly than the body’s normal cycle. This cell renewal time is shortened from 28 days to between 10 and 15 days.

The cell layers on the surface of the epidermis are reduced from 14 layers of impacted cells to 7 or 8 loosely woven layers, giving skin a rosy hue and healthy glow. As a result of this rapid exfoliation, the skin begins to function once again like adolescent skin. Blemishes, fine lines, blotchy skin, leathery skin texture, dryness, roughness, and wrinkles are improved giving the skin a more youthful appearance.

Step 6 – Moisturize

Protect and moisturize the skin. By doing all the previous steps, your skin is especially susceptible to the harmful rays of the sun and environmental pollutants. So be sure to moisturize and shield it. The protection step is vital in completing the cycle of skin rejuvenation reducing further photo damage.

Step 7 – De stress

Breathe in hope and breathe out anxiety. Be nice to yourself and smile. Eat healthy and keep fit. A well balanced diet and 6 to 8 glasses of water a day works wonders on skin. Its pretty much the inner glow that reflects outside. So keep a healthy lifestyle and good habits.
